Assistance Dog Assessment Process

We have an objective assistance dog assessment process to ensure all assistance dogs working under our organisation work to a high standard. To become an assistance dog, the partnerships must pass 3 levels of assessment - bronze, silver and gold.

Our gold assessment is the assessment which moves dogs from 'assistance dog in training' to 'assistance dog' level. Once partnerships have passed their gold assessment, we re-assess the partnership annually to ensure they retain the standard required.

What's included in each assessment?

The bronze, silver and gold assessments all are made up of 2 parts:

1) A 3 hours face to face group assessment in Nottingham/Derby which assesses the dogs behaviour, public access skills, handler skills as well as includes a CAWS assessment which assesses the dogs welfare. These are usually on the first Sunday of each month from 10.30am till 1.30pm.

2) A creative project, demonstrating understanding of the self guided virtual learning resources. For each assessment, clients are able to choose between 3 briefs which always includes a choice of written assessment, video recorded project or 3rd type of creative project such as a poster (which differs between levels).
